Software Choices for In‑House Databases.
A number of software packages are available to help create an in-house database on a microcomputer. Because these packages vary so widely and because different programs are suited to different applications, it is useful to categorize packages by general characteristics. In-house database software can be divided into 2 broad types: 1. general purpose, which includes text retrieval, file managers, and database management systems, and 2. special purpose, which covers information storage and retrieval (IS&R) packages, integrated bibliographic systems, and library automation applications. Each type of software is appropriate in different circumstances. For example, INMAGIC and Personal Librarian, both IS&R packages selling for under $1,000, are different in strengths and weaknesses when compared together
Text Retrieval Software for Microcomputers and Beyond: An Overview and a Review of Four Packages.
Software for textual files have seen active development in the last few years as the need for such packages grows. An in-depth review is made of 4 such packages: 1. Concordance, from Dataflight Software, 2. Concept Finder, from MUMPS Medical Information Management Systems Inc., 3. Personal Librarian, from Personal Library Software, and 4. Topic, from Verity Inc. Concordance is an easy-to-use package with a well-designed user interface. It offers the standard search features needed for text retrieval and includes integrated editing features and a report writer. Concept Finder\u27s strength is in its multifile capabilities and control over data. Complex relationships can be set up among data fields in multiple files. The search methodologies in Personal Librarian are well suited to ad hoc searching by end users. Meaningful results can be obtained without knowledge of Boolean logic. Topic is marketed primarily to organizations with large networked or time sharing systems with large amounts of text being added at various places on the system
Microcomputer-Based Library Catalog Software
There are now numerous commercially available microcomputer software packages for library catalog creation. The features and capabilities of these packages vary, as dog the costs. The article discusses factors that should be considered when comparing microcomputer software for library catalogs and discusses eight specific packages. The packages discussed are: BRS/Search Micros/Mini Version, Card Datalog, Golden Retriever, INMAGIC, TEQLIB, FINDER, SCIMATE, and STAR
The Sci‑Mate Software System: A Review
The Sci-Mate Software system consists of three software packages that together provide a total database system. The SciMate Searcher is designed for searching remote databases and downloading from them, the Sci-Mate Manager facilitates the creation and maintenance of private databases, and the Sci-Mate Editor creates formatted bibliographies. The Searcher does not substitute for knowledge of online databases but, when used in conjunction with the other modules, provides an excelIent and easy way to create localIy held databases. AlI three modules are reliable and easy to use
Information Needs of Rural Health Care Workers
Information workers, including physicians, nurses, social workers, etc., in rural areas have needs for a wide range of specialized information, but have difficulty getting access to information resources. As part of a rural health education project funded by the U.S. Department of Health and human Services, we studied the information needs of rural health workers in Hawaii and their current means of information access. Barriers to information access included lack of funds, lack of appropriate hardware, infrastructure problems (such as poor telephone lines or no convenient access to libraries), insufficient training in how to use information sources, and insufficient time to spend on information tasks. Only a small percent of those who have computers and modems and knowledge of online resources use them regularly. Recommendations for solving some of their information needs include the development of a rural health information clearinghouse; better identification, training, and exploitation of the specialized services available for health care workers; and, most importantly, the establishment of rural health care information agents (modeled on agricultural extension agents) on each major island. The methodology, needs identified, and recommendations are applicable to any rural community

Preservation of paper based materials: Present and future research and developments in the paper industry
While we still have much to learn, and there is room for further
progress, it is not only possible, but it is in the papermaker's own economic
interests to produce permanent/durable paper. Such paper can reasonably
be expected to last several hundred years instead of the twenty-five to fifty
years for modern acidic book paper. There is thus no excuse for producing
books and other publications of lasting importance on anything other
than paper meeting existing standards for permanence and durability.
There is reason to hope that this will finally happen. It is up to every
librarian, publisher and paper consumer to insist that it does and to use
whatever influence we have to speed this process.published or submitted for publicatio
